Galeão Airport is named after the world-renowned Brazilian musician Antônio Carlos Jobim, a co-founder of Bossa Nova. It is Rio's largest airport and is located on Ilha do Governador in the north of the city. Previously, the airport was an air force base and served as a starting point for many of Brazil's first transatlantic crossings to Europe.

Places of interest

The world-famous Christ the Redeemer statue, „Cristo Redentor“, stands majestically on Corcovado Mountain and is one of the most famous landmarks in the world. From the platform, there is a breathtaking panoramic view of Rio, the bays, beaches and surrounding hills.

No less iconic is Sugarloaf Mountain, an impressive granite peak that can be easily reached by cable car. From the top, there is a fantastic view of Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, as well as the endless blue of the Atlantic Ocean.

The vibrant city beach of Ipanema is known for its relaxed atmosphere, perfect waves and the colourful hustle and bustle of sun worshippers, beach vendors and water sports enthusiasts – a true slice of Brazilian life.

A real eye-catcher is the Escadaria Selarón, a staircase artistically decorated with colourful mosaics by Chilean artist Jorge Selarón. It connects the Lapa and Santa Teresa districts and is today one of Rio's most popular photo motifs.
