Gibraltar Airport is one of the few airports in the world where the main road runs directly across the runway. During take-offs and landings, Winston Churchill Avenue is closed off with barriers, like a level crossing. The airport is spectacularly located right on the border with Spain and below the famous Rock of Gibraltar, which is also the landmark of the British Overseas Territory.

The striking Rock of Gibraltar is the landmark of the British Overseas Territory and offers breathtaking views across the Strait of Gibraltar – and even as far as Africa on a clear day. The Rock is particularly famous for its resident Barbary macaques, the only wild monkeys in Europe.

A fascinating natural wonder inside the rock is St. Michael's Cave, an impressive stalactite cave with bizarre formations and atmospheric lighting – once used as a place of refuge, today concerts are occasionally held here.

A testament to Gibraltar's long and varied history is the Moorish Castle, whose origins date back to the 8th century. Also of historical significance are the Great Siege Tunnels, an extensive tunnel system hewn into the rock by British soldiers during the Great Siege in the 18th century.

• In Gibraltar, airplanes have priority. No joke, the main road in the city crosses the runway. When a plane arrives, the barriers come down. Plane through, cars carry on. Perfectly normal... or is it?
• Gibraltar speaks „Llanito“ – a mix of English, Spanish and… chaos. A typical sentence: „Vamos al supermarket pa“ comprar un chicken, okay?" Understood? Congratulations. You're officially bilingual-colourful.
• Big as a village, with the traffic of a world port. Huge cruise ships dock as if it were Manhattan, yet you can jog from north to south in 15 minutes. But who wants to jog when it's 30 degrees?
