Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport opened in 2001 and is considered one of the most modern airports in Southeastern Europe. It is named after the former Greek Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos. The airport is located about 20 kilometres east of the city centre and serves as an important hub for the Balkan region. In the terminal, you will find a small archaeology museum with ancient artefacts discovered during the construction work – history right at the gate, so to speak.

The Acropolis is arguably Athens' most famous landmark and one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world. Situated high above the city, it offers not only impressive ancient structures like the Parthenon but also expansive views over the Greek capital. Right at the foot of the hill, the modern Acropolis Museum displays impressive finds and sculptures from classical antiquity – bright, clearly structured, and with views of the original site.

In the heart of the city lies the bustling Syntagma Square, Athens' political centre and the stage for the traditional Changing of the Guard by the Evzones in front of the Hellenic Parliament – a truly photographic subject with great symbolism.

Just a few steps away begins the charming Plaka district, known for its narrow alleyways, neoclassical architecture, colourful facades, and cosy tavernas, where traditional Greek dishes and live music invite you to linger.

Another highlight is the green Lycabettus Hill, which at 277 metres is the highest point in the city centre and offers spectacular views over Athens to the Aegean Sea – particularly atmospheric at sunset.

Art and culture enthusiasts will also find numerous museums in Athens, including the National Museum, which houses one of the world's largest collections of ancient art, as well as modern galleries and open-air theatres. And those seeking a break from the city bustle will find it in the National Gardens or at the lively markets of the city.
