The airport was renamed in 2000 by the Alaskan legislature in honour of the then-long-serving US Senator Ted Stevens. Stevens had survived a plane crash at the airport in 1978, in which his wife Ann died. Anchorage, Alaska's largest city, is in the south of the US state on the Cook Inlet. Anchorage has some of the largest tidal ranges in the world. This large difference between high and low tide creates a bore wave in the Turnagain Arm, which is big enough to surf. Surfers in wetsuits use the tide to catch the wave as it rolls along the coast south of Anchorage.

Places of interest

Anchorage is known for its cultural attractions, including the Alaska Native Heritage Centre. This centre showcases traditional crafts and dances, as well as reconstructed dwellings of the indigenous people of the area.

The city is also the gateway to nearby wilderness areas and mountains such as the Chugach, Kenai, and Talkeetna Mountains. The Talkeetna Mountains are a mountain range of the North American Pacific Coast Ranges in the South Central region of the US state of Alaska. They lie north of Anchorage between the Chugach Mountains to the east and the Alaska Range, which encircles them in a semi-arc to the northwest.

The Anchorage Museum is a large art, history, ethnography, ecology, and science museum housed in a modern building in the heart of Anchorage, Alaska. It is dedicated to the study and exploration of Alaska's land, peoples, art, and history.
