Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport was opened in 1959 and is the largest and busiest airport in Russia. Originally planned as a military airport, it was later opened for civilian air traffic. Today, it serves as the main hub for the airline Aeroflot, connecting Moscow with numerous destinations worldwide. The airport is located about 30 kilometres north-west of the city centre and is one of the most modern airports in the country. Sheremetyevo was the first Moscow airport with a direct train connection to the city centre – the Aeroexpress.
