Oslo Airport Gardermoen opened in 1998, replacing the former Fornebu Airport. It is located approximately 50 km north of Oslo city centre and is Norway's largest airport. The airport has its own high-speed rail link to the city centre (Flytoget) and is considered one of the most modern and environmentally friendly airports in Europe. The architecture is inspired by Norwegian nature, with extensive use of wood and glass.

Places of interest

The Oslo Opera House, with its modern, snow-white architecture, resembles a drifting iceberg in the Oslo Fjord. Particularly exceptional: visitors can walk on the sloping roof while enjoying views over the city and water – art, architecture, and panorama combined.

In the expansive Vigeland Sculpture Park, over 200 sculptures by Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland impress – expressive, monumental, and set amidst greenery.

At the end of the elegant Karl Johans Gate stands the Royal Palace, the official residence of the Norwegian royal family. In the summer, the gardens are open to the public – with manicured paths and a touch of royal tranquility in the heart of the city.

A must for sports and view enthusiasts is the Holmenkollen Ski Jump. Located high above Oslo, it not only offers exciting insights into Norway's winter sports tradition, but also a spectacular panoramic view of the city, fjord, and forests.

Useless knowledge

• In Oslo, there's a metro station from which you can go directly onto a ski slope. Metro in, skis out, off you go. Who needs après-ski when you can have pre-ski?
• Norwegians are considered hardy when it comes to the weather – when temperatures drop below zero, they simply put on a thicker wool jumper and their smiles become even more relaxed. Temperatures below freezing are seen more as an invitation for a walk than a reason to stay indoors.
• In Oslo, you can observe seals and even whales in the Oslofjord right in the city centre.
• Elk salami, reindeer sausages, and brown cheese are part of the culinary reality. Not everything appeals to everyone's taste – but everything has tradition.
• Roughly half of the city area is composed of forests, lakes, and nature reserves.
