Habib Bourguiba International Airport opened in 1968 and is named after Tunisia's first president, Habib Bourguiba, who was born in Monastir. The airport is located right on the Mediterranean coast and is particularly popular with European package holidaymakers. In the 1980s, it was one of North Africa's busiest airports for charter flights from Europe. Monastir Airport is highly seasonal – more than twice as many passengers are handled in summer as in winter. The airport has also served as a backdrop for international film productions on several occasions, including scenes from the „Indiana Jones“ series.
