R. Tambo International Airport is the largest and busiest airport in Africa. It was opened in 1952 and is located approximately 22 km east of Johannesburg's city centre. The airport was named after Oliver Reginald Tambo, an important anti-apartheid activist and politician. JNB is the main hub for flights into and out of Southern Africa and boasts Africa's longest runway. Also known as the \u201eGateway to Africa,\u201c the airport serves over 20 million passengers annually and offers direct connections to almost all continents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Places of interest<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Apartheid Museum is one of South Africa's most important museums, offering an impressive insight into the history of racial segregation and the long road to democracy. Multimedia exhibitions, personal accounts, and original documents make visiting a moving experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nature lovers and families are drawn to the Lion Park, where visitors can experience lions, giraffes, zebras, and other wild animals up close \u2013 a safe safari alternative very close to the big city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A place of great historical significance is Constitution Hill. The former fortress and later prison complex now houses the Constitutional Court of South Africa as well as exhibitions on the history of human rights and political resistance. Figures such as Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi were imprisoned here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best overview of the city is offered by the Carlton Centre, the tallest building in Africa at 223 metres. From the viewing platform on the 50th floor, you get a wide view of Johannesburg \u2013 from the skyline to the mine dumps on the horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Useless knowledge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Here stands the world's largest man-made forest, and yet 90% of people believe it's a desert.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wild animals are never far away, sometimes literally: giraffes in the suburbs? Ostriches on the golf course? In Johannesburg, it's no joke but a reality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Potholes can have their own postcode.
