The extensive archaeological site, with its famous frescoes and labyrinthine structures, offers a fascinating glimpse into one of the oldest advanced civilisations in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right by the old harbour, the Venetian Koules fortress watches over the sea. The massive 16th-century structure once served to protect against pirates and today offers a magnificent view of the coast and the hustle and bustle of the harbour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A must-see for culture enthusiasts is the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, home to one of the world's most significant collections of Minoan art and artifacts \u2013 including the famous Phaistos Disc and masterfully crafted pottery and jewellery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those looking to taste the real Crete will find it at Heraklion's central market. Amidst colourful stalls, you can discover local specialities here such as olives, dried herbs, raki, and Cretan honey \u2013 ideal for gourmands and souvenir hunters alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Useless knowledge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The famous \u201eLion Fountain\u201c in the city has lion figures, but no real ones. The tourists are disappointed. But hey, no lion bites!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heraklion loves cheese so much that you'll probably try more varieties of cheese than you visit sights. A cheese tour, who needs culture?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Minotaur is said to have lived here in the labyrinth \u2013 nowadays, you get lost in winding old town streets instead, searching for the best souvlaki.
