It is Rio's largest airport and is located on Ilha do Governador in the north of the city. Previously, the airport was an air force base and served as a starting point for many of Brazil's first transatlantic crossings to Europe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33%\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Places of interest<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world-famous Christ the Redeemer statue, \u201eCristo Redentor\u201c, stands majestically on Corcovado Mountain and is one of the most famous landmarks in the world. From the platform, there is a breathtaking panoramic view of Rio, the bays, beaches and surrounding hills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No less iconic is Sugarloaf Mountain, an impressive granite peak that can be easily reached by cable car. From the top, there is a fantastic view of Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, as well as the endless blue of the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vibrant city beach of Ipanema is known for its relaxed atmosphere, perfect waves and the colourful hustle and bustle of sun worshippers, beach vendors and water sports enthusiasts \u2013 a true slice of Brazilian life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A real eye-catcher is the Escadaria Selar\u00f3n, a staircase artistically decorated with colourful mosaics by Chilean artist Jorge Selar\u00f3n.
